Practical Styling.

Erik Engstrom

I usually have a lot of staple pieces in my wardrobe. A lot of patterns, bright colors, and articles of clothing that make you just go, "wow!" I'm almost 30 and I'm choosing to be smarter with the way I live life. Let's use the term long lasting. As I mature and think about my apartment, my health, my closet, and my finances - simple is better.

So I'm downsizing. I've already tossed out 15 bags worth of clothes. Not literally tossing, giving away. Instead of quantity I am focusing on staples that will be able to last. Staples that I can mix and match. Greyscale outfits are a simple way to stay true. They are ageless outfits. They are easy to pair, easy to dress.

Living simple for me means functional. I'm a huge fan of Hunter boots. I think they are stylish and practical. Labor Day isn't here yet... so white jeans it is.

I Dream to Own Land.

Erik Engstrom

Sometimes I dream about owning land. Maybe a farm. Maybe a cabin on a lake. The opportunity to wander open areas and see beauty everywhere is an option I want to have.

Can you imagine waking up every morning, looking outside your window and seeing forests or a sunrise shining over a meadow? I can. That's how I want to wake up every morning. Make a cup of coffee, sit outside on the porch, and talk with the Mrs's (when that time comes). Yeah, I can do that.

I want my future kids to be wanderers and adventurers. To grow up playing outside instead of cooped up inside playing video games and watching TV. Instead, I want to have giant bonfires to sit around roasting marshmallows. I want four-wheelers to drive around on get muddy with. I want the carefree lifestyle that Pendleton so easily exemplifies amazingly.  It screams relaxation, coffee, fires, and happiness. I think I could go for that kind of life.

But First Coffee...

Erik Engstrom

Coffee is wonderful. Coffee is good. Coffee is so wonderful it's all I want.

When I am running around the city, to work, meetings, or simply running errands, I typically want a quick fix for my caffeine addiction. A trenta iced coffee from Starbucks is my go-to. It is quick, easy, and packs enough punch to keep me going. Starbucks has its time and place.

Here's the honest truth though...I much prefer going to a smaller, locally owned coffee shop. One that roasts their own beans in the back of their shop. One that doesn't have mass produced aprons that their baristas have to wear. One that allows their employees to have and show off any tattoos or piercings they may have. When I am in Chicago, Heritage General Store is my go-to. When I am visiting my parents in the suburbs? Hansa Coffee Roasters all the way.

Reading a book. Working on my novel. Editing photographs. Researching the hottest new restaurants in the city. Chatting with friends and family. Yea, Starbucks may fit the bill when I don't have time to truly enjoy the experience. But when I want to savor the moment, and cup of coffee, I will always choose a local coffee shop.
