Derby Fever.

Erik Engstrom

And they are off!

Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come. This weekend marks the running of the 141st Kentucky Derby and the Swedes unfortunately will not be in attendance... But that doesn't mean we won't be sipping on a Mint Julep, decked out in Madras and watching the main event.

The Derby has been on our wish list of events to attend. Perhaps one day... It's exciting, fast paced, full of fun bright colors, and it is completely acceptable to look like Ralph Lauren and Vineyard Vines catalogs vomited all over your outfit. I mean that in the classiest way possible.

Tommy + I have always dressed preppy. We began our prep attire in Abercrombie & Fitch polos in middle school and slowly transitioned to Ralph Lauren polos, J.Crew slacks and Bonobos blazers. You would be hard pressed to not find bright colored pants and madras everything in our closets. Madras shorts. Madras underwear. Madras shirts. Madras blazers. MADRAS EVERYTHING!!

What I love about the Kentucky Derby is the casual formal wear that you see in the stands. After recently making the bold decision to purchase an ascot, I have found a new affinity for this rather preppy, slightly yuppy, accessory. In fact, I like them so much that I will wear it for just about any occasion. Yes, I may look a little like Freddy from Scooby Doo, but you have to admit, Freddy ALWAYS looked good! Clearly the best dressed in that group of friends. I mean, all Scooby Doo has was a lame teal collar.

My advise for the Derby: Dress well. Dress in pastels and bright colors. And have fun. Oh, and be sure to check out Tommy's website, Smak, on Friday for a Mint Julep recipe!
